TOPAS Intensive course

Held from June 21 - 23, 2026, as a pre-conference workshop to the 19th European Powder Diffraction Conference (EPDIC19), this hands-on Workshop will teach you Modern Powder Diffraction Techniques using the TOPAS or TOPAS Academic software..

TOPAS Intensive course

Hands-on Workshop on Modern Powder Diffraction Techniques

This intensive workshop provides comprehensive hands-on training in state-of-the-art powder diffraction methods, combining theoretical insights with practical applications. It is tailored for graduate students, researchers, and professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in the following areas:

  • Crystal structure determination and refinement.
  • Microstructure analysis.
  • Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis.

The majority of the course will consist of practical sessions, guided by experienced tutors. Participants can choose to work with either TOPAS or TOPAS Academic software. Prior experience with the programs is not required, although it may be beneficial.

Learning objectives

  • Operating TOPAS in both graphical user interface (GUI) and scripting (Launch) modes.
  • Structure determination and refinement using global Rietveld refinement on Bragg and PDF data.
  • Microstructural analysis using the Whole Powder Pattern Modelling (WPPM) method

Requirements

Please bring a modern laptop with Windows 11 (64-bit) installed, administrator rights, and functioning WLAN. TOPAS V8 and temporary licenses will be provided during the workshop. If you are unable to bring a compatible laptop, you are welcome to follow.
